Highlights Itinerary Accommodation Inclusions/Exclusions
Take on northern Vietnam’s grandest adventure in style on an open-top Jeep tour through the rugged karst mountains of the Ha Giang Loop. Swap the cramped tourist paths for sweeping 360-degree views, hidden backroads, and authentic hill-tribe encounters, all with an experienced driver handling the switchbacks.
Day 0: Hanoi to Ha Giang City
Your journey starts in Hanoi Old Quarter, where you’ll be picked up for the drive north. If you fancy departing in the afternoon, board a comfortable limousine bus between 3:00 PM and 3:30 PM. Alternatively, opt for the overnight luxury sleeper bus with private cabins, picking up between 7:30 PM and 8:00 PM. Arrive in Ha Giang City to rest up at the homestay before setting off into the mountains the next morning.
Day 1: Ha Giang City – Quan Ba – Nam Dam – Yen Minh
Meet your driver at 8:30 AM and climb into the Jeep as the city gives way to massive mountain walls. Twist up the dramatic Bac Sum Slope, pulling over for a quick cuppa and to soak in the views. Continue climbing to Quan Ba Heaven Gate for a stunning look across the valley and the famous Twin Mountains. Next, branch off the main road into Nam Dam, an authentic village inhabited entirely by the Dao ethnic minority. Spend a couple of hours walking through the village to marvel at their traditional rammed-clay houses before tucking into a proper local lunch. In the afternoon, head off-grid down hidden backroads to Lung Tam village to meet H'mong artisans crafting traditional hand-woven textiles. Wrap up the day's drive in Yen Minh for a family-style dinner and a comfortable night at a local homestay.
After breakfast, hit the road for an iconic hour-long drive up Tham Ma Slope—a famous nine-step zigzag pass cut straight into the mountain side. Stop for photos before driving through Sung La Valley, famous for its centuries-old stone-walled houses. Press further north to the Lung Cu Flagpole, perched right on the border dividing Vietnam and China, where the sweeping boundary views are absolutely massive. Drop down into nearby Lo Lo Chai village to see the traditional clay homes of the Lo Lo people over lunch. Round off the afternoon with a visit to the historic H'mong King Palace (Vuong Residence), a grand century-old complex built from pine and stone. Head into Dong Van Town by late afternoon to check into your homestay and explore the evening atmosphere.
Set off early to experience the undisputed highlight of the trip: Ma Pi Leng Pass along the historic Happiness Road. Towering 2,000 metres up, this jagged mountain road hugs vertical cliff faces above the deep abyss. Drive down the Sky Path for unmatched views of the turquoise Nho Que River winding through Tu San Canyon below. After taking in the canyon, carry on through remote hamlets in Mau Due and Meo Vac for a well-earned lunch stop. The afternoon drive weaves down mountain tracks toward Du Gia village, home to seven distinct ethnic groups living side by side. Settle in at a Tay minority stilt-house homestay for a home-cooked feast and a few shots of local "happy water" with your hosts.
Kick off your final day with a morning walk and a refreshing plunge in the natural pools of Du Gia Waterfall. Bid farewell to your hosts and head back toward Ha Giang City along scenic, lesser-travelled routes via Duong Thuong Valley and the dramatic cliffside Thai An Road. Arrive back in Ha Giang City by mid-afternoon to freshen up before catching a 4:00 PM limousine bus back to Hanoi. You'll pull into Hanoi Old Quarter around 10:00 PM to finish your northern expedition.
